by Gail on February 11, 2011

Jeff King of the proposed Hebron Elks passed this  World War II poster reprint along to us. It seems fitting as we watch other Countries fighting for the Government  they want for themselves.

The small print on the poster you may not be able to read is as follows:

To help you do your share, the Government has organized the Citizens Service Corp as a p[art of the local Defense Councils, with some war task or responsibility for every man, woman and child.

Probably such a corps is already at work in your community. If not, help to start one. A free booklet available through your local Defense Council will tell you what to do and how to do it.

Go take action today, and get the satisfaction of doing a needed war job well !

The Eleventh Hour of the Eleventh Day of the Eleventh Month-Veterans Day

November 11, 2010

World War I officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28th, 1919 in the palace of Versailles, France. An armistice went into affect seven months earlier when the Allied Nations and Germany, on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.

President Wilson proclaimed November 11th.1919 the first commemoration of Armistice Day. President Wilson stated”  “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…”

The intent was to briefly suspend business beginning at 11:00 AM and enjoy parades and public meetings.

The United States Congress officially recognized the end of WW1 when it passed a concurrent resolution on June 4.1926

An Act (52 Stat. 351; 5 U. S. Code, Sec. 87a) was approved on May13, 1938 made Novenber 11th, a legal holiday. This day is to be dedicated to the cause of world peace known as Armistice Day. This day was set aside to honor veterans of Word War I. This Act was later amended due to the urging of Veterans organizations because of the massive deployment required by Word War II. The word “Armistice”  was replaced with Veterans Day. This was approved in June 1, 1954.

Novenmber11.th became a day to honor all Veterans of all wars

On October 8th, 1954 President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued the first “Veterans Day Proclamation” which stated: “In order to insure proper and widespread observance of this anniversary, all veterans, all veterans’ organizations, and the entire citizenry will wish to join hands in the common purpose. Toward this end, I am designating the Administrator of Veterans’ Affairs as Chairman of a Veterans Day National Committee, which shall include such other persons as the Chairman may select, and which will coordinate at the national level necessary planning for the observance. I am also requesting the heads of all departments and agencies of the Executive branch of the Government to assist the National Committee in every way possible.”

As we honor all our Veterans that keeps us free

” God Bless America”.

Why I Became an Elk

September 15, 2010
Glenna Long Elk of the Year

Glenna Long Elk of the Year

Glenna Long Elk of the Years

Glenna  married an Elk, a kind, strong and gentle person.  It isn’t surprising that he belonged to an organization that shares the same characteristics!

Glenna began attending charity and fund raising events, it was then she  knew this was an organization she could trust with her reputation.

Glenna joined the Elks in 2006 , after realizing the impact the Elks had on  our Country, our veterans and our community.

Christmas is a time for giving, and that’s when the Elks are the busiest.

A thank you letter from a family that lost one of their three children, Dad’s job and car trouble was  most touching. The letter was written  on elementary school paper stating they had given up hope until “the Elks came“. It is then that you know your efforts changes lives. What can be better ?

Glenna has been the recipient of:

  • The Elk of the Year award 2007 – 2008, by the Elks Lodge #314
  • The Elk of the Year award 2008 – 2009, by the Elks Lodge #314
  • Veteran Volunteer Award in 2007-2008 from the Elks National Veterans Service Commission.

Glenna and Jerry are joyfully organizing a new Proposed Hebron Elks Lodge for the growing area of Hebron and Burlington Kentucky. We are  attracting new membership weekly!

Our initial group naturally shares our vision, of course.  The dedication and enthusiasm our proposed new members bring, is exciting and renews our energy and dedication.  We are active with the Conner High School Band, fund raising and a membership drive.

Our forefather’s vision, that began 142 years ago,  is alive and well in Hebron. Burlington and Petersburg, Kentucky.

The season for giving is upon us.

Join us. Laugh with us. Share with us. You will be glad you did.

Honoring Richard Bross–Naval Veteran 1944

September 4, 2010

Have you played cards with Richard Bross? What a Joker!

Richard Bross a Joker

Richard Bross a Joker Naval Veteran 1944

Richard Bross was honored by the US Playing Card Company of Cincinnati, Ohio in 1944 by printing a special deck of cards that honored Richard, his twin brother James, and other US military servicemen.

Richard and James Bross enlisted in the Navy in 1944. They trained in the Great Lakes Naval Training Station before they were assigned to Jacksonville, Florida.

Excited to serve their country, they boarded their ship on Easter Sunday in Jacksonville, Florida. After traveling  through the Panama Canal to San Diego, and San Pedro as they were sent to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

Richard and James’ request to serve together was approved. They were sent to multiple islands in Hawaii. Johnson Island, Maui and trained at Barber Point by none other than Robert Stack( later became an actor).

The nine month Johnson Island assignment was memorable because there were only Quonset huts and one standing building!

Enjoying ten days in Honolulu, people walked in the streets because the sidewalks were so crowded, when the fleet was in.

“Of course it’s a lot more of a tourist spot now, but it was really pretty back then, states Richard Bross.

The USS Saratoga brought the serving brothers’ home together, along with other servicemen to San Francisco, California. After a 3 day train trip they surprised their Mother on Christmas day in 1945.

The Bross twins, were honorable discharged from San Diego in May 8, 1946.

They returned to the US Playing Card Co., where Richard met his wife, Helene. Helene, was Canadian born so they frequently traveled to Quebec.  They had two boys and one girl.  One son died at age 42. Richard lost his beloved wife after 48 years of marriage and his twin died at the age of 69.

Richard says “It’s strange that he should die so much younger than me.”

Richard is thankful that he still has his son and daughter is proud of the addition of four grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren and another due in November, 2010.

The Elks Contributed Scholarship Funds to Educate an United States President!

July 16, 2010
Elks National Logo

The Elks

The National Elks Foundation contributes to education, basketball, healthcare, fighting drug addiction, natural disaster relief, and National Revitalization. Honestly, it may be easier to ask what the Elks National Foundation doesn’t do.

What we never do is…. nothing.

We are involved in contributing to America.

Education:

Yes, President Bill Clinton received scholarship funds from the educational Legacy program of the National Elks Organization.

Would you donate $10.00 for 10 years to help with a student’s scholarship fund?  It’s simple really; this allows you to be a member to the Legacy program. Elk’s members’ children and grandchildren are eligible to apply for this scholarship funding.

Each year, The Elks National Foundation contributes over 3.65 million dollars nationally to educate America’s children. Yes, each year.

Basketball:

The foundation also supports the annual basketball program called the “Hoop Shoot” where over 3 million youths participate in local, district, state, regional and national competitions.  The winners attend a prestigious ceremony where their name is inscribed on a plaque and hung in the “Basketball Hall of Fame” in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Healthcare:

The Elks National Foundation paid $60,000.00 in 1910 to the Salvation Army helping soldiers that came home from the war at Christmas.

.

Drug Awareness:

Drug awareness materials are provided by the Elks Foundation giving the Elks an opportunity to reach out to our communities and educate the public on the dangers of drugs.

Natural Disaster Relief:

The Elks contribute to National disaster relief on an ongoing basis.

National Restoration:

When our symbol of freedom, the Statue of Liberty, needed restoration, the National Elks stood strong and contributed 1.5 million dollars.

We do so much more. The sad fact is the Elks contribute quietly and many do not learn of the Elk’s generosity and contributions to America’s success.

Check us out; everyone has the ability to share their unique talents.  All talents are accepted and appreciated.

Don’t worry about what you can’t do. We work with what you can do and are grateful for it!
